GOOGLE released it 4th Penguin update, dubbed as Penguin 2.0, aimed at dropping site’s search engine rankings, particularly those who violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines by employing the so-called “black hat SEO” like creating duplicate content, keyword stuffing, building link schemes, cloaking, and others.
Google changes its search algorithm more than 500 times every year, but most of them are only slight alterations with “major” update occurring only after few months. Nonetheless, SEMs must be aware of these updates as it will help explain the shifts in search engine rankings as well as site’s organic traffic.
According to Matt Cutts, Google’s renowned engineer, these major updates, for example, only affects 2.3% of all English queries as well as non-English that is thought to impact more webmasters and SEMs than its previous version – i.e. the Penguin 1.0 update.
